Longing for the Hope of Salvation

February 8, 2015 Preacher: Scott Hollingshead Series: Hope when life is hard

Topic: Salvation Scripture: 1 Peter 1:10–12

Introduction: “The main thing it to keep the main thing the main thing.”

BIG IDEA: 4 spectacular truths about the greatness of your salvation
1. The prophets inquired of it
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time

2. The Spirit revealed it
the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories

The prophetic proclamation had two basic components:
1. The Messiah would suffer- Ps 22; Ps 69:1-21; Isa 53; Dan 9:24-26; Zech 12:10; 13:7
2. The Messiah would triumph- Isa 9, Dan 2; Dan 7; Zech 2; Zech 14.

12 It was revealed that they were serving not themselves but you-

3. The apostles preached it
in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven

4. The angels long to look into it
things into which angels long to look

Response: So treasure it!
4 ways to take the gospel for granted:
1. Assume you know everything about salvation already
2. Always view it on the same basic level
3. Affinity for what’s new
4. Accessibility makes it lose its luster
