Hope that Perseveres

February 22, 2015 Preacher: Scott Hollingshead Series: Hope when life is hard

Topic: Hope Scripture: 1 Peter 1:13–21

BIG IDEA: Hope that perseveres requires a gospel response to the gospel received. 3 gospel responses:
1. Set your hope on God’s grace
13 Therefore-
COMMAND: Set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. How?
a. Roll up your mental sleeves-preparing your minds for action-
b. Take control of your thought life-and being sober-minded-

2. Pursue personal holiness
COMMAND: You also be holy in all your conduct- But how?
a. Instill your new family values-As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance-
b. Imitate your Father-But as he who called you is holy-
c. Identify yourself as set apart- Since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”-

3. Live with a healthy fear of God
COMMAND: Conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile Why?
a. Your Father is also the Judge- And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds-
b. You were ransomed from your former way of life- knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers not with perishable things such as silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of YOU
c. You're called to trust in God and His promises–who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
