Hope's Witness

March 22, 2015 Preacher: Scott Hollingshead Series: Hope when life is hard

Topic: Witness Scripture: 1 Peter 2:11–17

1. Big Idea: You’re here to live like the people of God on mission for Jesus to the glory of God. Adopt your missional lifestyle:
11 Beloved…strangers and exiles-
1. Abstain from the flesh- I urge you to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.-
-Win the internal battle of passions.
-What are the "passions of the flesh"-Gal 5:19
-You don’t manage sin, you kill sin! Put on the armor of God!
ii. How? By maintaining clean conduct- 12Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable,
1. Why? Your life can lead unbelievers to glorify God!- so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
Our lives should lead people to Jesus!
2. Submit to human authorities- 13 Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution,
i. Examples-
1. The head- whether it be to the emperor as supreme,
2. Or his representatives- 14 or to governors as sent by him-
ii. Purpose-
1. to punish those who do evil and-
2. to praise those who do good.-
iii. Why?
1. It’s God’s will- 15 For this is the will of God
2. It will silence your opponents- that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.
iv. Motivation?
1. Christ's Freedmen serve - 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a coverup for evil, but living as servants of God
2. Don’t let your liberty become reason for licentiousness.
3. Respect each dimension of your citizenship appropriately-17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
