Topic: Man Scripture: Genesis 1:26–28

Title: Man

Verse: Genesis 1:26-28

Gen 5:1-2 When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.

1) Origin of man

Gen 2:7 then the Lord formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

4 Implications:

  1. Relationship to God
  2. Relationship to self
  3. Relationship to others
  4. Relationship to creation Genesis1:28- Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

2) Image of God in man

Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping things that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

3 misconceptions of the image of God:

  1. Over/underemphasis
  2. Substantive view
  3. Functional view

Definition: The image of God involves the ways man is like God and represents God. To mirror God in such a way that the world could look at us and have a glimpse of what God is like.

Rom 8:29 be conformed to the image of His Son

Col 3:10 to put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator

2 Cor 3:18- beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.

just as we have born the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven (1 Cor 15:49).

3) Personhood of man

Psalm 139:13-16- for you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

2 primary views:

  1. Trichotomy-1 Thessalonians5:23 “and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blames at the coming of our Lord Jesus.”
  2. Dichotomy

4) Gender of man

Gen 1:27 male and female he created them. Jesus affirmed this Matt 19:4 Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female.

Gen 2:20b-24- But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, This is at last bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh’ she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
